Bloomfield athletes competed in Atlanta tourney
FARMINGTON — A trio of area wrestlers took home All-America honors Sunday at the USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle and Greco Roman Nationals tournament in Atlanta.
Despite losing matches early on, sixth-graders Delayne Luster (eighth place) and Tyler Reinhardt (seventh place) had strong performances in the consolation bracket for their age group. Eighth grader Ada'n Benavidez reached the semifinals, placing sixth overall for his age group.
All three competed for the Cornerstone Wrestling Club, which is based in Bloomfield.
“We’re making great strides. To get three All-Americans on our club, we’re excited,” coach Adam Benavidez said, adding it was the third straight year the team had qualified for nationals. “These guys are putting hours of work in, day in and day out. You could see the growth we had.”
Adam Benavidez said Reinhardt withstood a headlock and then responded with his own headlock to secure a win, while Ada’n Benavidez crossed to the opposite side of the mat and threw his opponent backward into the air to clinch his spot as an All-American.
Adam Benavidez also said Luster generated enough points over the course of the tournament to be named an All-American.
“Their experience is starting to show there,” Adam Benavidez said. “They were so fearless when they were given opportunities.”
Wrestlers must place in the top eight to receive All-American honors.
