FARMINGTON — The Aztec wrestling team got off to a good start in the Blackwatch Tournament in Upland, Calif., and sits in first place after Day 1 of the two-day tournament.

The Tigers finished Monday — a day that included three championship rounds and four consolation rounds — with 96 points, seven points clear of second place Roosevelt, Calif. Roosevelt won the tournament last year.

Boulder Creek, Ariz., is in third place with 80.5 points. A total of 66 teams are competing in the tournament.

“We’re really pleased with how the boys are performing,” said Aztec head coach Monte Maxwell. “Overall, we’re really pleased. Twelve of our 13 (wrestlers) have scored points, five are still in the quarterfinals and five are on the backside (consolation bracket). So 10 of our 13 guys are still wrestling.”

Josiah Griego (106), Cody Candelaria (120), Brandon Trennepohl (132), Austin Littlefield (145) and Josh Snow (160) are in the quarterfinals.

Tommy Fletcher (113), Ruben Teasyatwho (126), Dillon Blue (138), Trenton Tom (170) and Dylan Sutherland (195) remain alive in the consolation bracket.

The tournament will conclude Tuesday afternoon.

“We have to step it up in this next round. There are some really good teams here. We’re only up seven points, and we have to wrestle each match,” Maxwell said. “We have to get through the quarters and semis, then we’ll know where we’re at. We have to get through the next two rounds and see how many we pull through, and how we match up with the other top teams.”
