Three area volleyball teams make playoffs

FARMINGTON – Navajo Prep, Piedra Vista and Kirtland Central all did plenty to help their cases for spots in this year's state volleyball tournament.

Prep (20-2) earned the No. 2 seed in the 3A tournament, while PV (16-6) earned the No. 6 seed in the 5A bracket. Kirtland (16-6) earned the No. 7 seed in the 4A bracket.

Prep beat 2A power Zuni (twice), 4A’s Gallup and 3A foes Raton and Cobre in late September before plowing its way to the District 1-3A regular season and tournament titles.

Kirtland won the District 1-4A regular season and tournament titles. 

The Lady Broncos’ key wins include Prep and Hatch Valley, and they also won nine regular-season district matches.

Piedra Vista placed second in the District 2-5A regular season standings, but generated some key victories along the way. 

PV’s key wins include Farmington (three times), Los Alamos, Los Lunas, Kirtland and Rio Rancho.

Farmington (15-8) built a strong playoff resume, but the Scorpions did not qualify for the 5A tournament.

The Scorpions’ key wins included Kirtland (twice), Los Alamos, Goddard, Española Valley and Roswell. Farmington also swept PV in the district tournament semifinals.

Tournament action gets underway with pool play Thursday morning in Rio Rancho.

First-round matches for the 3A bracket start at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. First-matches for Class 4A and 5A begin at 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Thursday.
