Key upcoming matches to watch

Kirtland Central vs. Gallup, 7 p.m. Thursday

Clinging to a one-match lead over Miyamura for first place in the district race, Kirtland Central has a chance to extend its unbeaten district record Thursday. The Broncos can also distance themselves from the Bengals in the standings with a win.

That scenario would greatly help Kirtland, which will play three of its final four district matches on the road, including next week's rematch at Miyamura.

Farmington at La Cueva, 2:30 p.m. Saturday

After dropping Tuesday's five-set slugfest against Piedra Vista, Farmington has reached a critical stage in district play.

In order to at least stay in the hunt for the second spot in district, as well as a higher 5A playoff seed, the Scorpions must carry that momentum of having pushed the Panthers to five sets into Saturday's match.

Win or lose, Farmington would get back on track if it goes five sets in Round 2 against La Cueva. That'll help the Scorps restore their confidence entering their final three district matches, two of which are at home against Eldorado and West Mesa, while the third is at PV.
