Kirtland volleyball grad shares her knowledge
Nia Nelson helps coach youngsters at camp
UPPER FRUITLAND — As she prepares to depart for Haskell Indian Nations University in less than a month, Nia Nelson made time to share her volleyball knowledge with some youngsters Thursday and today here at the Walter Collins Center.
“Now I get the privilege to go and teach these little kids, just to give back, just to show them the sport I came to love,” Nelson said.
The recent Kirtland Central volleyball graduate, alongside fellow camp coach Trudy Tso, taught seven campers, five girls and two boys in grades three through six more than just the basic hitting, passing, serving and defense drills. The campers also learned how to play smart volleyball.
They focused on bumping the ball over for a quick kill attempt at the net. They also focused on anticipating where the ball will land, knowing where to shuffle their feet and when to let it fly out of bounds.
“They’re really getting the hang of it pretty well,” Nelson said. “We’re trying to teach them as much as we can.”
It was only for two days, but the curriculum is designed to ensure long-term growth and success.
