FARMINGTON — The Aztec volleyball team is the lone unbeaten team in District 1-5A after the Lady Tigers knocked off Farmington 25-23, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-22 tonight at Scorpion Gym.

“It’s our homecoming week, so there’s always a few distractions, but they played well,” Aztec coach Anna Strauss said. “We were down 17-11 in the fourth set and came back. It was pretty exciting, and they did a good job."

Taley Ferrari led Aztec with 14 kills, followed by Vanessa Chavez with 13. Myra McCaskill recorded 56 digs, and Karly Phillips dished out 37 assists.

As a team the Lady Tigers finished with 15 aces.

“That’s something we’ve been working on and talking to the girls about. We want to take other teams out of system,” Strauss said of the Lady Tigers’ serving.

Despite the loss, Farmington coach Alana Rowland was largely pleased with the play of her Lady Scorps.

“For what it’s worth, we played pretty well,” she said. “We’re still struggling to finish a set, whether we have the lead or fighting back to gain the lead. It’s still a struggle, but we are getting better.”

Farmington will play at Miyamura on Thursday.

Aztec will host Gallup on Thursday.

Bloomfield 3, Gallup 2

The Bloomfield volleyball team battled for every point and did just enough to escape with a win in five sets over Gallup tonight in Gallup.

The Lady Bobcats took the first set 25-18 before dropping second and third sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-15. But in the fourth and fifth sets, the Lady Bobcats came away with two two-point wins, beating the Lady Bengals 26-24 and 17-15 to secure the victory.

Bloomfield coach Sunni Baird said the hostile crowd in Gallup got her team going and helped push them to the win.

“It started a little slow, and I don’t think that was good for us,” Baird said. “We play better when the crowd is loud and intense, so when things picked up later in the match, the girls fed off of it.”

Bloomfield will be back on the road again Thursday, traveling to Kirtland to take on the Lady Broncos.

Kirtland Central 3, Miyamura 1

The Kirtland Central volleyball team knocked off Miyamura 25-22, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-13 tonight at Bronco Arena in Kirtland.

After a winless nondistrict schedule, the Lady Broncos have now won two straight and sit at 2-1 in District 1-5A.

KC coach Nadia Watson could not be reached for comment.

KC will host Bloomfield on Thursday.

Bayfield, Colo., 3, Piedra Vista 1

The Piedra Vista volleyball team couldn’t overcome a raucous crowd in Bayfield, Colo., tonight with the Lady Wolveries winning 13-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19.

PV coach Ron Becker could not be reached for comment.

PV will be back in action in District 1-6A on Friday, traveling to Albuquerque to play Volcano Vista.
