Farmington girls tennis again wins state title

The Farmington girls tennis team took home the blue trophy on Saturday, its seventh state title since 2009.

The Farmington Lady Scorpions again secured their place on the mountaintop in New Mexico girls tennis Saturday down in Albuquerque, winning their seventh state team championship since 2009.

After receiving a first-round bye, FHS swept through its competition.

Farmington took down Alamogordo, Los Alamos and Albuquerque Academy, respectively, by a combined score of 19-0.

The Lady Scorpions lose seniors Monica Briones and Arin Coleman, but will have most of their key group back in 2019. The returning personnel include individual girls finalist Emily Nguyen, Eliza Merrion, Anna Briones, Rachel Kelly and Cassidy Gallegos.

Meanwhile, the Farmington boys reached the 5A state team semifinals on Saturday.

The Scorpions said goodbye to five seniors, including Nate Benson and Marshall Magnuson. Benson and Magnuson went a combined 28-2 in singles play this season.

Farmington's Eliza Merrion returns a volley on the back line of the court during the 5A state girls tennis team championships in Albuquerque. Merrion's one of the Lady Scorpions' key returners for 2019.
