FARMINGTON — Farmington High School’s tennis teams already punched their tickets to state after securing regular-season district titles, but they preserved that momentum with strong outings in Friday’s district individual championships in Belen.

The Scorpions' Emily Nguyen exacted revenge against Valencia’s Karolina Melvivcia, who beat Nguyen in their last meeting two weeks ago, to win the girls singles title.

Farmington's Arin Coleman and Monica Briones topped teammates Eliza Merrion and Anna Briones to win the girls doubles title.

“It’s nice to have that pressure. There’s pressure to qualify for state as individuals. That district is a very pressured situation, and they handled it real well,” Farmington girls coach Pat McGrath said. “There’s a lot of experience there. They’re a smart group. They know what they have to do.”

Farmington's Ethan Nguyen topped teammate Nate Benson to win the boys singles title, while Luke Stoltzfus and Clayton Rachel took first place in boys doubles, beating Kyle Hickerson and Marshall Magnuson in the title match.

“It was a great end of the season. We thought it’d be all us in the finals, and it was,” Scorpions boys coach Larry Larson said.

The state championships begin Wednesday in Albuquerque.

The boys eye their first blue trophy, while the girls look to win their seventh title since 2009.
