FARMINGTON – The Farmington boys and girls tennis teams took a couple close losses with both teams falling to Robertson 5-4 Friday in Albuquerque.
Lady Scorps head coach Pat McGrath said the experience of playing Robertson was very good for the team, adding that he believes the Lady Cardinals are the heavy favorites to win the 4A title this year.
“Playing them was great for us. We got great matches with no pressure worrying about team seeding,” McGrath said.
Riley Coleman and Hailie Nygren lost a battle in their doubles match 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. McGrath said the two Lady Scorps are close to being one of the top doubles teams in the state.
“They are very close to clicking,” McGrath said of Coleman and Nygren. “Right now they are counterpunchers reacting to what the opponent gives them. Once they start controlling the points, they are going to win these long matches.”
On the boys side, Andrew Moss, Sol Rascon and Peyton Rasmussen picked up individual wins for the Scorps.
Moss and Rasmussen won in straight sets, but Rascon had to battle back after dropping the first set to get the win 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Elijah Larson and Khaleel Hollingsworth won their doubles match 6-2, 6-3 for the Scorps’ fourth win on the day.
Farmington boys head coach Larry Larson said the loss to the Cardinals was “a heartbreaker,” but added, “it was a very close and competitive match with a good team.”
The Farmington boys and girls, and the Piedra Vista boys and girls were scheduled to play Gallup and Miyamura Saturday morning for the District 1-5A duals, but the matches were canceled because of poor weather conditions.
The Farmington and PV teams will face each other in a crosstown dual Tuesday afternoon.
