FARMINGTON — The Farmington softball team’s lineup got off to a fast start to open 2019, crushing Kirtland Central 12-1 in five innings Tuesday at Ricketts Softball Complex.

The Lady Scorpions hit multiple line drives and quickly ran up the scoreboard.

FHS also hit choppers in various directions to where baserunners had plenty of time to dart across the bases.

“It was exciting. We’ve really been focusing on trying to stay back (early in the batters box), and I think the girls did a good job,” FHS coach Tim Trotter said. “We had a lot of hard line drives (Tuesday), which is what I wanted from them. We hit some balls to the other side of the field.”

Farmington (1-0) will host Navajo Prep at 4 p.m. Thursday, while Kirtland (2-2) will host San Juan, Utah at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Chieftains capitalized on multiple opportunities to advance on the base paths, coasting to a 17-1 win in five innings over Monument Valley, Arizona on Tuesday.

Shiprock had 10 hits, but mostly set itself up to do damage elsewhere.

Shiprock went from one base to the next thanks to 10 wild pitches, five batters being hit by pitches, three stolen bases, eight walks and four MV fielding errors.

Shiprock (1-0) will face Bernaillo at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to start the Bloomfield Invitational.
