BLOOMFIELD — Defensively, Bloomfield infielder Ashley Lewellen has the awareness and footwork to make quick plays all across the diamond, and that caught the attention of Mesa Community College’s softball program.

After signing with the Thunderbirds today via athletic scholarship, Lewellen hopes she can help bolster their defense right away.

“It's nice to know every position and then know what to do at that certain position. It's a good quality,” Lewellen said.

Although she primarily plays shortstop, Lewellen has played every infield spot and been a pitcher. She said that has made her a more well-rounded defender.

Preparing for her college career at Mesa, a National Junior College Athletic Association program in Mesa, Arizona, Lewellen said she's working on improving her accuracy throwing to the bags when trying to get a fast put-out. She admitted she's been erratic in those instances.

"I need to slow down and take my time on plays. I'm just mostly working on being patient, setting my feet, make sure (teammates) are looking at me," Lewellen said.

Lewellen said she hopes to eventually transfer to an NCAA Division I program in Arizona, such as Arizona State University or Grand Canyon University, after putting in a year or two at Mesa C.C.
