BERNALILLO — Alamogordo will play for a state title after eliminating Farmington 3-0 in today's 5A state boys soccer semifinals at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex.
“These boys have already achieved more than they could’ve imagined, but I’m telling you right now, they’re not finished. They’re not done," Tigers coach Lee Wilder said.
Alamogordo struck early and quickly in the first half, as Julian Torres found the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Adam Foltz then scored on a header off a corner kick by Lucas Burch to extend the Tiger lead to 2-0. Foltz later scored again on a penalty kick.
The Scorpions went through a tough road entering today's contest, beating Aztec during the final two minutes of their 5A playoff opener and ousting third-seeded St. Pius in Thursday's quarterfinals.
Farmington, the No. 6 seed, ended its season at 16-5-2.
“They had opportunities. We had opportunities. Theirs went in, ours didn’t," Farmington coach Byron Farnsworth said. "We hit the crossbar a handful of times. Their keeper made a few great saves. That’s soccer, unfortunately. Offensively, I felt like a lot of stuff went against us."
The second-seeded Tigers (17-3-2) will face top-seeded Albuquerque Academy in the 5A title game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Alamogordo's last state boys soccer finals appearance came in 1993.
“We’re hoping to take it all the way," Foltz said. "Last year, we came and we lost against Academy, and we get to play them again. We’re ready for them. We think we’re the better team, so hopefully we can take it.”
