FARMINGTON — The Aztec and Farmington girls soccer teams posted shutout victories in today’s 5A state quarterfinals in Bernalillo.
The Lady Tigers edged Los Lunas 1-0, while the Lady Scorpions routed Valencia for a 6-0 win.
With five minutes left in the first half, Aztec’s Sierra Villanueva scored the game-winner from about 25 yards out.
“She made a run up the left side of the field. She moved the ball inside, saw the keeper was off the line, put the ball in the back of the net. It sealed it,” Lady Tigers coach Kelly Kelso said. “It’s great. First game’s always tough. It was a battle, (and) we got through it.”
Meanwhile, Farmington’s offense erupted and buried five second-half goals.
“They just hit it and kept going. Nerves settled down. They just took care of business,” Lady Scorpions coach Brynn Cochran said. “We were able to control (the ball) in the middle. Our forwards took advantage of it.”
Farmington, the No. 4 seed, will face top-seeded Albuquerque Academy in the 5A semifinals. Second-seeded Aztec will face sixth-seeded Los Alamos in the other semifinal match.
Both matches start at 10 a.m. Friday.
