FARMINGTON — It took the Piedra Vista girls soccer team a little while to get things going on offense, but the Lady Panthers soon knocked in some goals en route to a 3-0 home-opening win over Kirtland Central today.

"You start worrying, and you start thinking, 'Is this ever going to happen?' Normally when the first one goes in, the rest of them are going to start going in," PV coach Adam Huff said. "You've got to create some luck, and then hope that the luck actually happens."

Early on, shot attempts went high and wide, while others were easily deflected. A few other shot attempts had little to no velocity on them, and KC goalkeeper Jayden Guillory made some easy saves in the box.

"We weren't able to get goals in, we weren't able to get touches in," Lady Panthers forward Lyric Velarde said. "Concentration is where we lack a little bit sometimes."

Kirtland Central goalkeeper Jayden Guillory holds the ball after making a save in the first half Tuesday at Piedra Vista.

Nothing was happening for the Lady Panthers, not until roughly 30 minutes into regulation.

Velarde changed PV's fortunes when she bumped in the first goal of the match off a corner kick, using the side of her chest.

"It was pretty radical for me. It was a rush," said Velarde, who switched from playing defender to forward.

Sydney Montano and Whitney Chacon put the match away with PV's second and third goals, respectively.

Piedra Vista's Alysa Acosta, left, moves the ball in the first half of Tuesday's match against Kirtland Central.

PV (2-1-1) will host Valencia at 3 p.m. Friday, while Kirtland Central (1-3) will play at 4 p.m. Sept. 1 at Santa Fe.
