FARMINGTON — The Navajo Prep girls soccer team is in the midst of its best season this decade and notched its fourth win of the season when the Lady Eagles topped Miyamara 2-1 today at Eagle Stadium.

Navajo Prep's Taryn Yazzie, right, and Miyamura's Tana Menapace compete for the ball on Tuesday at Eagle Stadium.

The win is the Lady Eagles’ fourth of the season, matching their win total from the last three seasons combined.

“They were hitting on all cylinders,” Prep coach Stacy Irwin said. "We stuck with the formation that we’ve been running all year instead of switching it up like we did last week against Kirtland (Central). The girls got their shots off, and the front line was really clicking well, and the midfield really stepped up.”

Naakii Brown scored both goals for the Lady Eagles. The first came about 14 minutes into the match on a free kick that found the top of the goal. Brown’s second goal came with about 15 minutes remaining in the match when she beat Miyamura’s defense down the middle of the field and used a chip shot to get over the Lady Patriots’ keeper.

Irwin said the Lady Eagles’ back line made a couple of mistakes in the match, but did a good job of recovering quickly to keep the Lady Patriots from scoring.

Miyamura’s goal came with about four minutes left in the match.

Prep will play Friday and Saturday at a tournament in Show Low, Ariz. Irwin said the team doesn’t know much about its opponents at the tourney and plans to use the weekend as a final tuneup before district play begins next week.

Albuquerque Academy 1, Aztec 0

The Albuquerque Academy girls soccer team found the back of the net early, and it was enough to lift the Lady Chargers (4-5) over Aztec 1-0 tonight at Fred Cook Memorial Stadium in Aztec.

Aztec at Los Lunas, PPD

Aztec (2-6-1) will play at Kirtland Central (2-2) on Tuesday for the Tigers’ first District 1-5A match.
