FARMINGTON — The Piedra Vista boys golf team’s state title defense is off to a strong start after it won Monday’s Shiprock Invitational at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland.

PV shot 292, just four strokes over par, as a team.

Trey Diehl had a stellar outing, shooting five strokes under par for a score of 67. River Smalley, Tyler Diehl and Justin Harris shot 74, 75 and 76, respectively.

PV already qualified for state during the fall campaign back on Sept. 10, but some of the younger, less experienced players increased their chances of going as individual competitors after Monday’s 2019 opener.

Aidan Miller and Sebastian Massey both shot scores of 80, their first qualifying scores of year. Both need two more qualifying scores to punch their tickets to state.

PV will return to action for the “Shootout in the Desert” meet 9:30 a.m. April 15 at Albuquerque’s Canyon Club.

Area baseball, softball teams still ranked

Piedra Vista and Farmington stayed put as the No. 6 and 7 teams, respectively, in the latest New Mexico Overtime Sports Center 5A baseball rankings.

Kirtland Central is No. 10 in the latest 4A rankings, while Aztec just missed cracking the top 10. AHS was just one vote behind Kirtland in the poll.

PV moved up to No. 5 in this week’s 5A softball poll, while Aztec remains at No. 4 in the latest 4A poll.
