FARMINGTON — Piedra Vista golfers Tyler Diehl and Trey Diehl have demonstrated time and again they can thrive against stout competition, and they look to make that same impact at the next level after signing with New Mexico State University today via athletic scholarships.

“Being able to go with my brother makes it even more special. It’s going to be fun,” Trey Diehl said. “With it being in New Mexico and us living pretty close, it just felt like a good fit.”

Tyler Diehl said he and Trey will continue to push each other at the next level, just as they’ve done at PV.

The Diehl brothers are the centerpiece of the Panthers’ recent success, which includes winning the state golf title last spring.

Trey Diehl said NMSU, an NCAA Division I program located in Las Cruces, was drawn to the brothers’ playing styles and their championship pedigree.

“We practiced every day to work for that first state championship, and we’re working just as hard to get the second one. We’re just going to transfer that (effort) to New Mexico State,” Tyler Diehl said.

Tyler Diehl said he wants to keep fine tuning his putting and chipping.

“At that (Division I) level, pretty much everything has to be solid. Your whole game has to be solid,” he said.

Trey Diehl said he wants to get physically stronger entering the next level to ensure consistent results, knowing there will be longer distances between the tee box and the hole.

“The stronger you are, the better player you can be,” he said. “That’s one of the factors in becoming a better golfer nowadays.”

NMSU has won eight Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championships since the 2005-2006 campaign.

“I’m really excited to see just how good that next competition is,” Tyler Diehl said.
