Trey Diehl secured Piedra Vista a spot in this year’s 5A boys golf state championships after shooting 68 (three under par) today to start off the two-day Durango Invitational.

Diehl’s score was the Panthers’ third and final leg needed to qualify as a team for state, which will take place May 13 and 14 at the Canyon Club at Four Hills on Albuquerque's east side.

River Smalley shot 72, while Quinn Yost and Justin Harris shot 78 and 79, respectively.

The Durango Invitational’s scoring rules between New Mexico and Colorado differ.

PV shot 297 (13 over par) for its New Mexico scorecard on Day 1, which includes its top four performers.

However, it shot 218 (five over par) for its Colorado scorecard, in which the top three scores count.

PV will conclude the tournament at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
