FARMINGTON — The Aztec Tigers capitalized on a couple critical miscues by St. Pius to pull ahead to a 27-20 victory today at Nusenda Community Stadium in Albuquerque.
Aztec first recovered the ball at the St. Pius 2-yard line after a botched snap on a punt attempt. Alex Parra then punched in a two-yard touchdown run, his second score of the game.
Then, early in the third quarter, St. Pius fumbled the ball and Aztec scooped it up for a defensive touchdown to make it 27-7 at that point.
St. Pius gave Aztec a late scare after a forced turnover on downs, and a Tigers interception made it a one-possession game with 8:27 left in regulation. However, Aztec’s defense had a key fourth-down stop at the AHS 20 to secure the win.
Aztec (5-1) will host Santa Fe on Homecoming night at 7 p.m. Oct. 4.
