Broncos outlast Grants for key resume win
FARMINGTON – The Kirtland Central Broncos outlasted Grants for a key resume win, 42-34, in tonight’s 4A slugfest at Bill Cawood Field in Kirtland.
After Zakk Thomas punched in a four-yard touchdown run, Dallin Mangelson broke free up the middle for a 50-yard touchdown reception to give the Broncos a 14-6 lead in the opening minutes.
Grants’ Isaiah Johnson found the end zone on a couple key first-half drives for the Pirates, who led KC 26-14 at halftime.
The two sides traded blows on the scoreboard as the second half progressed, but the Broncos eventually secured the win after turning a fumble recovery into a touchdown and later tacking on another touchdown pass.
KC intercepted a pass at the Grants 36-yard line to set up that final touchdown.
After opening 2019 on a rough note, Kirtland (2-3) got its first quality win of the season. Grants is now 4-1 this year.
