FARMINGTON — The football season came to a halt today for both Piedra Vista and Aztec.
Artesia pulled ahead in the second quarter to top the visiting Panthers 39-20 in the 5A quarterfinals at the Bulldog Bowl. Elsewhere, a few late turnovers cost the Tigers in their 31-25 4A quarterfinals loss to St. Pius at Nusenda Community Stadium in Albuquerque.
Artesia and its potent pass-first spread offense did damage from the start, including a 58-yard touchdown reception by Alex Fernandez.
The Bulldogs led 25-6 at halftime, and the Panthers couldn’t overcome that deficit.
Aztec was clinging to a 25-21 lead with about nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a go-ahead touchdown reception by St. Pius wide receiver Jacob McCoy gave the Sartans the lead.
The Tigers later blew three solid chances to regain the lead.
During that sequence, Aztec turned the ball over on downs twice, and Tiger quarterback Zach Taylor threw an interception with 2:25 left.
PV’s season ended at 8-4, while Aztec’s season ended at 6-6.
St. Pius (8-3) will take on Bloomfield (8-4) in next weekend’s 4A semifinals. Bloomfield defeated Kirtland Central 21-0 on Friday night.
The game time and location will be determined.
