Despite dropping its first game of the season to Escalante on Friday night, the Newcomb Skyhawks will open the 2A playoffs in front of the home crowd.

Newcomb (9-1) earned the No. 6 seed in the bracket and will host No. 11 Lordsburg (3-7) in the first round next weekend.

“It’s good for the community. For us, it’s nice to play at home. The kids are hungry to correct some things fundamentally,” said coach Eric Stovall, whose squad posted its best regular season record in school history. “They know they’re capable of playing better. They’re going to bounce back. They’re resilient.”

The bracket was released tonight.

The Skyhawks traveled to LHS on Sept. 22, winning a 40-38 slugfest.

“That bus ride’s a long, long ways. eight hours,” Stovall said.

Although the Skyhawks will have home-field advantage against the Mavericks this time, Stovall expects a difficult rematch.

“We’ve got our hands full. They’re going to run well off-tackle. They’re a team that’s going to ground and pound. In the playoffs, you’ve got to stop the run to win,” Stovall said.
