Newcomb kept on punching, and counter-punching, out on the gridiron today, topping Lordsburg in a 40-38 slugfest on the road.

The Skyhawks generated its first lead of the day off a 60-yard pick-six, later jumping ahead on a 65-yard touchdown reception.

After multiple scores by Lordsburg, Deondre Begay pulled the Skyhawks ahead with a pair of rushing touchdowns (5 and 10 yards, respectively) in the third quarter.

The Newcomb passing game got the offense going, and it propelled NHS late in the fourth quarter.

The Skyhawks remain unbeaten at 5-0 this season.

Newcomb will host Questa at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 to open District 1/5-2A play.

Bobcats drop back-to-back games

Hope Christian pulled away late in the fourth quarter to top Bloomfield 36-21 today in Albuquerque.

The Bobcats gave the Huskies problems for much of the day, as Hope clung to a 24-21 lead after three.

However, Bloomfield struggled to withstand Hope’s pressure up front in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats (3-2) will host Valencia at 7 p.m. Sept. 28.
