Scorps win thriller over Aztec
Last-second kick return lifts Farmington to dramatic victory
FARMINGTON — Juan Medrano was the hero in the final seconds of Fridayt’s slugfest between Aztec and Farmington, taking the football to the house on a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown to lead the Scorpions to a 32-27 victory over the Tigers at Hutchison Stadium.
FHS pulled ahead of Aztec, leading 26-14 entering the fourth quarter. But the visitors quickly stormed back.
Tigers quarterback Zach Taylor darted down the left side to score on a 32-yard keeper in the fourth quarter. Then, with 36 seconds left, Taylor connected with Mike Phillips on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Aztec led 27-26 at that point.
Then came Medrano’s big moment, capping the entertaining affair.
Farmington’s has scored 60 combined points in its back-to-back victories the last two weeks.
FHS (2-2) will play at Durango, Colorado, at 7 p.m. Sept. 21, while Aztec (1-3) will host Crownpoint in its homecoming game that same night.
Kirtland Central edges Piedra Vista
The Broncos defeated the Panthers, 7-6, Friday at Bill Cawood Field.
Kirtland beat PV for the first time since 2010.
Newcomb and Navajo Prep victorious, while Shiprock and Bloomfield fall on road
Newcomb topped Zuni 54-34, while Prep blasted Crownpoint 50-0 via the mercy rule.
Meanwhile, Shiprock lost 53-0 via the mercy rule at Bernalillo. Elsewhere, Bloomfield dropped its first game of the season, falling 28-20 at Los Alamos.
