FARMINGTON — Multiple area football teams were rewarded for holding their own against tougher adversaries the first two weeks of 2018 and are ranked highly in this week’s New Mexico High School Coaches Association poll.

Piedra Vista enters Week 3 as 5A’s fifth-ranked team, while Aztec (No. 6), Bloomfield (No. 8) and Kirtland Central (No. 10) are all ranked in the 4A poll. Newcomb is the ninth-ranked squad in 2A.

PV opened the campaign against New Mexico football powers Los Lunas and St. Pius.

Aztec crushed Miyamura and gave Clovis problems early on, while Bloomfield and Newcomb both won their first two games. Kirtland took on southern Idaho heavyweight Minico High back in Week 1.

Piedra Vista, Navajo Prep volleyball teams ranked

PV is eighth in the first 5A volleyball poll of the season, while Prep comes in at seventh in the 3A poll.

The Lady Panthers swept Bayfield, Colorado and Durango, Colorado, to start 2018. Despite an 0-2 start, the Lady Eagles opened 2018 against 4A’s Kirtland Central and 5A’s Capital.
