FARMINGTON — The Farmington football team seized control early by throwing the ball deep downfield and hammered Los Lunas 41-14 in tonight’s 5A state quarterfinals at Hutchison Stadium.

"Farmington is playing its best football. We've got some momentum going ever since we beat Miyamura," Scorpions wide receiver Jacob Brown said. "We just beat a power team from the south, and that's just building momentum."

Brown opened the floodgates, scoring on a 62-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline, giving his team a 14-7 lead with 14 seconds left in the first quarter.

Los Lunas running back Jacob Luna tied the game again at 14 after bursting through the middle for an 8-yard score, but the Scorpions kept generating big plays as the game progressed.

"I don't think we did a very good job moving the ball all night on offense. (Farmington's) got a lot of speed, and they swarmed to the ball really well," first-year Los Lunas coach Jeremy Maupin said.

Brown scored again on a 40-yard touchdown reception down the inner left crease. And after FHS quarterback Isaiah Jaramillo slashed his way down the field left and right for a 45-yard score, there was no turning back.

Farmington kept on attacking the outer wings.

"Isaiah pinpointed good. Isaiah dropped it good. Accuracy was good from Isaiah," said Brown, who had four touchdown receptions.

Meanwhile, the Los Lunas attack had difficulty getting past the blockade that is Farmington’s sturdy zone coverage. The fourth-seeded Scorpions got plenty of stops up the middle via group tackling and also batted away multiple passes through the inner gaps.

Fifth-seeded Los Lunas’ season ended at 8-4.

Farmington (8-3) will face the Artesia/St. Pius winner in next weekend's 5A state semifinals.
