FARMINGTON — Farmington’s offense kept its foot on the gas all night, rolling past Gallup 53-0 via mercy rule in tonight’s District 1-5A opener at Hutchison Stadium.

“It was really exciting. We haven’t had a game that explosive this year,” Scorpions wide receiver Ethan Todd said. “Our (offensive) line was holding, our run game was strong, all of our receivers were blocking. We had a phenomenal game.”

Scorpion runners routinely blasted through creases up the middle in the early going.

“We were able to run the ball effectively for 7-plus yards at a time. That’s huge. It can change how the (opposing) defense plays the pass. And we love to throw the ball, there’s no secret about that,” Farmington coach Jeff Dalton said. “Being able to be a little bit more balanced really opens things up.”

Running back Axel Fowler got Farmington on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run 35 seconds into regulation, but the onslaught was just beginning. Fowler later scored on a 58-yard touchdown run after cutting through a crease on the left side.

The Scorpion running backs continued to move the chains, which soon opened the door for quarterback Isaiah Jaramillo to easily hit his targets by connecting on quick routes. Those shorter passes soon evolved into deeper throws, and the game quickly spiraled out of control.

Wide receiver Kale Lucas scored on a 62-yard touchdown reception, and fellow wideout Jacob Brown broke free near the Scorpions sideline and bolted into the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown reception.

The Scorpions were up 47-0 at halftime, needing just one third-quarter score to put the game to bed.

Johnny Shuttleworth did just that, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown reception with 4:27 left in the third quarter.

Farmington (3-3, 1-0) resumes district play at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Kirtland Central, while Gallup (1-5, 0-1) will host Miyamura in district action at 7 that same night.
