Piedra Vista improves to 2-0 with victory over Rockets

FARMINGTON – The Piedra Vista football team's backfield had a field day attacking the interior lanes.

Panther ball carriers found plenty of openings up the middle and took off, guiding the home team to a 30-7 win over Goddard tonight at Hutchison Stadium.

"We just kept grinding, kept executing our blocks and would always rip (a big gain) off," PV running back McKay Cook said. "We just kept the momentum in our favor, and I think that's what helped us win the game."

Left and right, Cook, Trent Kiraly and Israel Gutierrez broke tackles and went through gaps. They zigzagged and bolted to the sides for a considerable number of 7-, 8-, 9-, even 10-yard runs.

Cook helped the Panthers draw first blood two and a half minutes into regulation, bursting through the middle for a 9-yard touchdown run. PV opened the game going 72 yards on seven plays during that drive.

And even after Christian Chavez broke the game open with an 80-yard punt return for a score and later draining a 43-yard field goal, PV’s ground unit kept pounding through the line of scrimmage.

The sizable gains kept on coming, and PV kept chopping time off the clock to coast to victory.

"If we can do that every game, I'll be a happy coach. It helps us control the ball, move the field, change the field position," Panthers coach Jared Howell said. "To be able to methodically do that, that's something that we hope we can continue."

Cook, Kiraly and Gutierrez combined for 240 rushing yards, and Cook and Kiraly each had one rushing touchdown.

PV (2-0) will play at 1 p.m. Sept. 9 at Durango, Colo., while Goddard (1-1) will host Carlsbad at 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
