KC runner named New Mexico cross country POY

The accolades keep coming for Kirtland Central’s Kashon Harrison.

The three-time district champion, first-time state champion and third-team All-American added New Mexico’s Gatorade player of the year award to his stacked cross country r’esum’e today.

Harrison began peaking at District, gradually decreasing his time after each of his final three races in 2017.

Harrison won both the District 1-5A boys cross country title (16 minutes, 12.26 seconds) and the 5A boys cross country title (15:54.85). He went unbeaten in 2017.

Harrison then placed 14th out of 40 runners nationally (15:50.19) at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Dec. 9 in San Diego.

Following that race, Harrison said the experience helped improve his breathing and in speeding up more efficiently.

Harrison returns for his senior season with the Broncos in 2018.
