Area girls basketball games to watch this year

Farmington's Jordan Vasquez steals the ball from Aztec's Reigan Weaver during a district basketball game on Feb. 10 at Scorpion Arena. Both Farmington and Aztec have key nondistrict games on their respective schedules in December.

Farmington vs. Whitehorse, Utah, noon Nov. 29

First-year Lady Scorpions coach Larenson Henderson will make his FHS debut by returning to the Chieftain Pit in Shiprock for the Jerry Richardson Memorial tournament.

Henderson went 154-29 in his six seasons coaching the Lady Chieftains, leading Shiprock to a state title in 2017, two state runner-up finishes and three state semifinals appearances.

Kirtland Central at Piedra Vista, 7 p.m. Dec. 4

First-year Lady Broncos coach Devon Manning will return to his former school, as he coached the PV boys the previous two seasons.

Manning guided PV to the state playoffs last year, the second of his two seasons with the Panthers.

Aztec at Santa Fe Indian, 7 p.m. Dec. 4

This will be the Lady Tigers' first real test of the season against 3A power SFIS, which went 25-5 last season.

If Aztec can be competitive in this contest, that will give its returning group its first burst of much-needed confidence after last year's rough campaign.

It also may indicate how the rest of this seasonwill play out, with foes like Farmington and PV on the horizon.

Farmington vs. Rio Rancho, 7 p.m. Dec. 22

This will be the first significant Class 5A game for the Lady Scorpions.

Rio Rancho has won 40 combined games in the past two seasons playing in the now-defunct Class 6A. A win over the Rams would look good on Farmington's playoff résumé.

A win of that quality could help improve the Scorps' chances when they face La Cueva, West Mesa, Eldorado and PV during District 2-5A competition, and it could also help indicate whether this season will be Farmington's time to contend.
