ALBUQUERQUE — The Farmington Scorpions started with a bang and then held off a late Albuquerque Academy rally in today’s 5A state quarterfinals, winning 8-4 at Santa Ana Star Field.

FHS (22-5) scored all eight of its runs in the first two innings, including a six-run barrage with two outs left in the second.

Emilio Pardo’s two-run homer over the left-center wall highlighted that inning.

“We has some good at-bats. Took advantage of a couple mistakes they made, and we put the ball in play,” Farmington coach Sean Trotter said.

Academy (19-11) cut the deficit to 8-4 in the sixth inning off of back-to-back RBI doubles by AJ Bergman and Sebastian Baca.

“We were up against the ropes right there,” Trotter said. “We were up four runs, but it felt like at any second it could go the other way in a heartbeat.”

However, FHS reliever Kobe Shorty stopped the bleeding with two runners on and no outs at that point, courtesy of a pickoff, a pop-out and a strikeout.

Farmington will face St. Pius in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Santa Ana Star Field.
