FARMINGTON – Piedra Vista’s Deylan Pigford can be a doubly tough matchup as a switch-hitter who can get on base quickly.

And that’s why he’s convinced he can help Midland College’s lineup right away after signing with the Chaparrals today via athletic scholarship.

Pigford said Midland College, a National Junior College Athletic Association program in Midland, Texas, sought a speedy switch-hitter to help bolster the top of its lineup.

"They stress getting hits, using speed to your advantage. Lefty-on-lefty match-ups are really hard. So to be able to hit both ways, I think that gives the advantage to the offense. That's going to be good," Pigford said. "If I can just get on (base) and let (Midland's) power guys (drive) me in, I think that's going to be a huge advantage to produce runs."

Pigford, an outfielder, also said he hopes to be able to track down the ball quickly to help produce outs on defense.

Pigford is currently hitting .289 with one home run, 11 RBIs and two stolen bases for PV.

After a year or two at Midland, Pigford said he plans to transfer to a NCAA Division I baseball program and work his way to potentially going pro.
