Miners host LA Tech Thursday night
With an 11-19 record entering the Conference USA Tournament, the UTEP men's basketball team is nowhere close to being considered among the nation's best teams.
But rejoice, or maybe hang your head in shame, UTEP fans you are highly thought of — sort of.
According to thrillist.com, the UTEP fans are the seventh most obnoxious college basketball fans in the country in a list of 16 schools, a Sweet 16 of sorts as the NCAA Tournament gets closer to starting later this month.
Whether that is pure baloney or justifiable is definitely up for debate.
But, here is what Matt Meltzer and Jeff Zanotti of thrillist.com have to say about UTEP fans:
"Because UTEP basketball isn’t known for much other than beating down racist-[expletive] Adolph Rupp back when it was Texas Western, its fans don’t get their due for being some of the nastiest in all of college basketball. Going to a game at the Haskins Center, you might think to yourself 'El Paso is no treasure but at least the game should be fun.' Walking into the stadium, you realize everyone is screaming exceptionally loud for a weekday game against Rice. Then there’s a fight. Then a row of fans behind you doesn’t like a first half foul call and screams 'You’re [expletive] gonna die, ref!' repeatedly, even during halftime. Then you realize all you can smell is a combination of whiskey, tequila, and more whiskey, and that you should probably get the hell out of there before someone mistakes you for that ref. As you leave, you make a mental note to warn anyone who hasn’t been through UTEP that their fans are the Raiders fans of college basketball."
UTEP shares the list with some big name schools, including No. 1 Maryland, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 University of North Carolina. Also on the list is former Western Athletic Conference foe, Brigham Young, which comes in at No. 16.
