FARMINGTON – The 2018 Connie Mack World Series opened with a bang, starting with Thursday’s opening ceremony at Ricketts Park.

Hianni Olivares of the Florida Legends smashed 13 home runs to win the CMWS home run derby, 10 of which came in the opening round.

Later that evening, CMWS Chairwoman Carol May prolonged that energy and excitement by concluding the festivities with a nice tune on the piano. This year will be May's last as a CMWS committee member.

But the nice strokes on the field carried over into today’s pool play games.

As a case in point, the Southern California Renegades’ bats went off, crushing plenty of hard shots through the gaps en route to a 9-0, 5-inning mercy rule win over the Florida Legends at Farmington Sports Complex.
