Aztec bounced by Ruidoso in Roswell volleyball tournament
FARMINGTON — The Aztec volleyball team didn't win the Roswell tournament, but coach Anna Strauss still came away from this weekend's event smiling.
Ruidoso ousted the Lady Tigers in straight sets Saturday, winning 25-16, 25-21 and 25-9. The match was Aztec's only one on the day after having gone a solid 11-5 in pool play on Friday.
"I'm really happy where we are at this point. I don't think we have anything to hang our heads about," Strauss said.
Sophomore Vanessa Chavez gave a valiant effort in the loss, finishing with six kills and four blocks. Junior Eden McCluhan came up with three blocks.
"We had a rough go passing today and Ruidoso played a really sound game," Strauss said of the loss. "We're going to have our growing pains. But playing good teams like (Ruidoso) can only help us grow as the season moves along and the playoffs get closer."
Aztec got to Saturday's game because of its impressive pool play performance one day prior, something Strauss was very proud of.
"The girls got into a groove," she said. "They blocked really well, served really well and that really keyed our successful day."
Aztec will take on Kirtland Central in a 4 p.m. road game on Tuesday. Strauss said playing a more consistent brand of volleyball is her focus moving forward.
"Consistency comes with experience, and we're getting that experience playing in big tournaments like these," she said. "It's such a game of momentum and such a swinging gate that we just have to learn to how handle that part of the game better, and I think we will."
