FARMINGTON — The Piedra Vista volleyball team went undefeated in pool play at the PV Classic, but it wasn't easy for the Lady Panthers.

In the final match of pool play, Kirtland Central gave PV all it could handle with one set finally ending with the Lady Broncos winning 33-31, although PV went on to win the match.

"We played really well," PV head coach Ron Becker said. "We had a really exciting match against Kirtland Central. ... It was a fun match and really exciting."

KC head coach Nadia Watson said the PV match was a great experience for the Lady Broncos, and she hopes it will help build the team's confidence and show the girls they can complete against any team in the state.

After dropping the first match of the day to Wingate, the Lady Broncos got going and finished second in pool play to set up a semifinal match in the gold bracket against St. Pius X. Pius finished first in Pool B after going undefeated.

Pius' height, athleticism and skill were too much for the Lady Broncos in the semifinal match, and the Lady Sartans swept KCHS to advance to the finals.

PV will play Arizona's Monument Valley today at noon in the other semifinal match, with the winner advancing to meet Pius in the finals at 4 this afternoon and the loser taking on KCHS in the third-place match at 2 p.m.

Shiprock finished third in Pool B to reach the silver bracket semifinals.

Bloomfield finished third in Pool A and will play Gallup at 8 this morning.

Navajo Prep ended up fifth in Pool A and will play Dulce today at 8 a.m. The two teams met earlier this week, with Prep sweeping the Lady Hawks.
