FARMINGTON — The Aztec volleyball team picked up some much-needed experience this weekend when the young Lady Tigers opened up their season at the Belen Tournament, reaching the tournament's consolation bracket finals.

"The girls and I are excited for the season," Aztec head coach Anna Strauss stated in a text message. "It was a great learning experience, and we definitely grew together as a team. Lots of positives."

After finishing fifth in pool play, Aztec met Taos in the consolation bracket Saturday morning and took care of the opposing Lady Tigers in straight sets, 25-20, 25-14, 25-13.

The win over Taos moved Aztec into in the consolation bracket finals against Magdelena.

But Strauss' team couldn't carry the momentum from the morning match into the afternoon and fell to 2A Magdelena 25-18, 15-25, 27-25, 25-19.

Aztec's two most experienced players, middle blocker and outside hitter Vanessa Chavez, and setter Myra McCaskill, both just sophomores, were selected to the all-tournament team.

Aztec will have a few days of practice to get ready for its next match. The Lady Tigers are home to face Grants Thursday at Lillywhite Gym.
