AZTEC — San Juan County Chief Deputy Assessor Jimmy Voita will fill the role of assessor after Clyde Ward leaves for a new job in Santa Fe.

Voita will take over the county assessor's office when Ward leaves for a position in the New Mexico State Land Office. Ward's last day will be Sept. 25.

In a commission meeting this month, Ward recommended Voita take his place. The commission unanimously approved appointing Voita to the seat during its Tuesday meeting.

Voita will serve as assessor until the 2016 general election, when he would have to campaign to win the seat and serve a full term.

A county assessor can serve two, four-year terms.
