FARMINGTON — A 21-year-old San Juan County man was charged in August with raping a 7-year-old relative.

Stephen York was charged Aug. 17 in Aztec Magistrate Court with criminal sexual penetration of a child under age 13, a first-degree felony.

He was being held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 cash-only bond, according to court records.

York had not yet been provided legal representation by the court or obtained a private attorney, court records state.

Another relative reported the alleged abuse to San Juan County Sheriff's Office deputies on Aug. 10, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The victim told deputies in an interview that York "put his thing in my thing" and did other "gross stuff" to her at his residence on County Road 5500 southwest of Bloomfield.

The girl underwent a sexual assault examination and was interviewed by investigators, the affidavit states.

She told investigators she was sexually penetrated by York several times, according to the affidavit.

York told deputies in an interview that he did not sexually assault the girl and he was not certain why she said he did.

York initially agreed to provide a DNA sample to deputies, but declined to sign a form stating he would do so, the affidavit states.

According to court records, deputies obtained a search warrant and collected DNA from York.

York is expected to appear Thursday at a preliminary examination hearing.
