Letter: The choices made now will decide our future

I am writing you about something I feel is very important. We are at a crucial point in history, and the choices made by individuals all across this country are going to be the deciding factor in our future.

Candidates are beginning to announce their bids for the 2016 presidential election. I am respectfully asking you to consider giving some press coverage to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., regardless of your political views. No matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican, it is hard to disagree with some of the things he says — like the fact that we need to be having serious political discussion in this country instead of treating the subject of politics as the sort of drunken game show portrayal we see today. The political atmosphere in America needs to be talked about, and we need political involvement and media that covers real issues.

Please do not accept the stigma of the words used to describe Sen. Sanders, and please take a thorough look at his policies before denouncing him as some sort of fringe candidate. He is a smart, articulate and well-respected representative who has been consistent in his views for 30 years. There are no candidates who are trying to protect the future of America as much as he is, and many famous historical figures of the Republican party were closer in ideology to Bernie Sanders than to the Republicans of today.

There are a lot of people who could be lifted from their cynicism if they realize there is a candidate who is truly after their best interests, and is not for sale. We are at a pivotal point of American history — please give him a chance, and do not tell yourself that it is impossible. As long as we are alive, we have the ability to take our country into our own hands. I am 18 years old and I will spend my summer getting the word out should he decide to run.
