FARMINGTON — Police are still investigating the scene of a fatal accident that killed one person south of Bloomfield on U.S. Highway 550 today, according to New Mexico State Police spokesman Carl Christiansen.

There were multiple vehicles involved, and several people were transported for nonfatal injuries, Christiansen said.

Police have not released the identities of the accident victims.

Christiansen said he did not know if the wreck occurred in the northbound or southbound lane of the highway. He said traffic was being diverted onto the shoulder at the scene.

The San Juan County Communications Authority received a call at 2:48 p.m. from a person who reported there was a vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 550 near mile marker 136. 

The investigation is still in its early phases. The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator and the state police crash reconstruction unit is en route to the scene.
