Navajo Veterinary and Livestock Program offering free testing
FARMINGTON — In response to concerns about livestock exposure to contaminated San Juan River water, the Navajo Veterinary and Livestock Program is providing free blood testing and examinations for cattle and sheep.
The service is open to Navajo ranchers and farmers who have livestock living along the San Juan River and are concerned their animals consumed river water during the Gold King Mine spill.
The Aug. 5 spill released a plume of toxic metals into the Animas and San Juan rivers.
Testing will be completed on cattle and sheep that are 2 years old and older. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Thursday at the rodeo grounds in Shiprock.
