FARMINGTON — A former Arizona state representative has been appointed as the veteran liaison for the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President.

Jamescita Peshlakai was named to the position during a veterans services and benefits summit on June 24 in Gallup, according to a press release from the president's office.

Vice President Jonathan Nez said in the release that Peshlakai was selected because she could "bridge that gap" between the office and the Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs.

Peshlakai served as state representative for District 7 from 2013 to 2014 and ran for the state senate in 2014 but lost the primary election.

She is an Army veteran who served with the 403rd Combat Support Hospital in the Persian Gulf War and was stationed in the neutral zone between Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, according to the release.
