FARMINGTON — A 24-year-old Shiprock man was sentenced Friday to 12 months in federal prison for attempting to steal a wallet from an elderly man in October, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Orlando Jay Johnson was accused of stealing a wallet from the pocket of an elderly man outside the McDonald's restaurant in Shiprock on Oct. 23, 2014, according to the criminal complaint.

The victim chased Johnson about a half-mile in his truck and eventually caught up to him, at which point Johnson returned the wallet, the complaint states. Johnson was then arrested by Shiprock police, according to the complaint. Johnson told FBI agents that he had been homeless for three days and believed the elderly man would be an easier target.

Johnson was charged Oct. 31 with theft and pleaded guilty to the offense on March 26. He will serve three years of probation upon his release from prison, the press release states.
