Navajo Nation Council speaker in vehicle crash
LoRenzo Bates, other driver suffer minor injuries
FARMINGTON — Navajo Nation Council Speaker LoRenzo Bates was involved in a vehicle crash today, according to a statement from his office.
Navajo Nation Police Chief Phillip Francisco said the two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 491 and Navajo Route 5 north of Newcomb.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital, Francisco said.
The cause remains under investigation, he added.
Bates represents the Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Tiis Tsoh Sikaad, Tsé Daa K'aan and Upper Fruitland chapters on the council, and he was elected to serve his second term as speaker in January 2017.
At the time of the crash, Bates was traveling to Window Rock, Arizona, to preside over a special meeting of the Naa'bik'íyáti' Committee, according to his office's statement.
The statement said the speaker was expected to be released from the hospital today.
"We ask for your prayers and support for speaker and his family at this time," according to the statement.
