Meeting to provide information about pipeline project
Event will be held Saturday morning at Shiprock Chapter house
FARMINGTON — A meeting to provide information about the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project will be held this weekend in Shiprock.
The water infrastructure project consists of 280 miles of pipeline, several pumping plants and two water treatment plants.
After it is completed by the end of 2024, the system will deliver water from the San Juan River to chapters on the Navajo Nation, the city of Gallup and the southwest portion of the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
The informational meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Shiprock Chapter house.
Pat Page, deputy construction engineer for the project for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, said engineers from the bureau's Four Corners Construction Office in Farmington will give an overview and update about the project. Representatives from the Navajo Nation Department of Water Resources will attend as well, Page said.
"We encourage anybody with questions to come and get information," he said.
Page said the meeting is part of an ongoing effort to keep the public informed about the project's status and to provide team members the opportunity to answer questions. The meeting was arranged in response to a request from Shiprock Chapter residents, he added.
"We're always eager to do that," Page said about supplying information to communities.
Construction for the first section of the system began when ground was broken in McKinley County on June 2, 2012.
In September, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced a $62 million contract was awarded to install 28 miles of pipeline from Twin Lakes to Naschitti as part of the San Juan Lateral.
Page said the contractor is preparing the area, and construction will start this year.
