Fire closed U.S. Highway 491 in Shiprock

FARMINGTON — A section of U.S. Highway 491 closed in Shiprock Wednesday due to a fire that started that afternoon in a vacant two-story building on the north side.

Carl Slater, spokesman for the Navajo Division of Transportation, said tribal police in Shiprock notified the division about the fire inside the building that used to house the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Slater said all lanes of north U.S. Highway 491, from the entrance of Northern Navajo Medical Center to the intersection near the Navajo Nation Police department, has been closed.

He did not have further information about the fire but said U.S. Highway 64 is not affected and remains open.
