A semitrailer was making a U-turn Thursday morning into the northbound lane at the 87.8 mile marker on U.S. Highway 491 when a small sedan smashed into its trailer, the release states.

A Shiprock police officer came upon the vehicles at 5:25 a.m. and found the sedan's driver, a 54-year-old man, dead at the scene, according to the release.

The victim was not identified in the press release.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, but the driver of the sedan may have been distracted, according to the release.

Navajo police are investigating the crash with assistance from New Mexico State Police and the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

Shiprock police Capt. Ivan Tsosie praised the quick response from the law enforcement agencies and the San Juan County Fire Department.
