FARMINGTON — Fire crews from two states responded today to a fire north of the New Mexico-Colorado border.

The Los Pinos Fire Protection District in Colorado and the San Juan County Fire Department responded to the blaze this evening, according to San Juan County public relations manager Susan Hakanson.

There was a large smoke plume from the fire visible from Farmington.

Colorado firefighters were in command of the response, and San Juan County firefighters were providing support, Hakanson said.

The San Juan County Office of Emergency Management advised people to avoid N.M. Highway 511 in the area of the fire, according to a Facebook post.

The dry conditions in San Juan County recently led the San Juan County Commission to approve a ban on outside burning and the city of Farmington to implement a stage 1 water advisory.
