FARMINGTON — The San Juan Regional Medical Center's Board of Directors has announced it will not renew hospital CEO Rick Wallace’s contract.

A press release the hospital issued on Tuesday states the board's reason for not renewing the contract was "the need to take a different direction in leadership."

Hospital spokeswoman Laura Werbner said the board had no further comment. She also declined to say when the decision about Wallace's contract was made.

Wallace has been the hospital's CEO for nearly six years. He started there in February 2010.

"It has been my honor and privilege to have served the patients, community, employees and physicians as San Juan Regional Medical Center CEO,” Wallace said in a statement in the release.

Board chairwoman Charlene Scott said in the release that Wallace has helped the hospital navigate changes in the health care industry. She also said the board was grateful for his dedication.

"Moving forward, the board feels a change in leadership is necessary to continue to reach new levels of success in the San Juan County medical community," Scott said in the statement.

Wallace's last day will be Feb. 29. The board has started the process of selecting an interim CEO, according to the release.
